Archival BV Repair Calf, Dyed
Our new Repair Calf is sourced from the Indian sub-continent. The leather is initially tanned at source using mimosa, or materials from the same family of tannins. When the skins arrive in our Edinburgh Tannery, we remove the majority of this original tannage and then re-tan, using Tara or Sumac. In addition to improving the leather with these superior tannages, we also add our Archival tannage, yielding leather that is both durable and a pleasure to use.
These skins are produced in a mixture of whole skins or 'sides' (half skins taken from much larger whole skins).
*Average Skin Size: 0.80 - 1.0m² (8½ - 10.75 ft²) Approx. Cut Size: 80 x 50 cm Standard Substance: 0.75 mm Colours available: 8 shades plus natural undyed (biscuit) - See next item Grades: II, III and IV
Approximate price for single skins: Dyed Grade II - £130.00 per skin Dyed Grade III - £114.00 per skin Dyed Grade IV - £73.00 per skin Quantity discounts are available.

Archival Book Calf
A Scandinavian calfskin tanned using the same process as our standard Bookcalf. The leather is then retanned with aluminium, dyed and left with an aniline finish as with the Bookcalf. Compared to regular Bookcalf (or Repair Calf), it has a slightly bolder grain and is less likely to "bruise" with handling.
Average Skin Size: 0.74 - 0.86m² (8 - 9¼ft²) Approx. Cut Size: 70 x 60 cm Standard Substance: 0.8 mm Colours available: Limited stocks are held in cols.3 (light Brown) and 15 (tan). Other shades may be supplied to order. Please contact us by e-mail for further information.
Approximate price for single skins: Grade I - £215.00 per skin Grade II - £164.00 per skin Quantity discounts are available.

Archival Fair Calf
|
As the Archival Calf above, the Archival Fair Calf is retanned. However, due to the reaction of myrabolans with aluminium, it must be pointed out that the Fair calfskin is a pale yellow colour rather than the cream colour of our normal Bookcalf production.
Average Skin Size: 0.74 - 0.86m² (8 - 9¼ft²) Approx. Cut Size: 70 x 60 cm Standard Substance: 0.8 mm
Approximate price for single skins: Grade I - £209.00 per skin Grade II - £159.00 per skin Quantity discounts are available.

Bangladesh Vegetable Calf, Natural
Price: £85.00 Excluding VAT at 17.5% |
This new leather is a cheaper alternative to our normal Faircalf. It should be noted that there are several drawbacks over the traditional Scandinavian calf that relate to the leather's original tannage. This leather is initially tanned using mimosa, or a similar non-lightfast material. Although we remove this original tannage as best we can from the skins and then re-tan using Tara or Sumac, the leather will never have the lightfastness or ageing properties normally expected from our Fair Calf.
In addition to the ageing and lightfastness issues, the skins are sourced from many different tanneries in Bangladesh therefore there will be some variation in colour within and between packs.
*Average Skin Size: 0.80 - 0.90m² (8¾ - 9¾ ft²) Approx. Cut Size: 80 x 50 cm Standard Substance: 0.8 mm
Grades: Run Selection (Equivalent to grade II) |

Antique Calf
Antique Calf also undergoes the same processing as the Bookcalf, but instead of leaving the skins with the aniline look, we finish off the surface with a light pigment coating. We then add a second colour by 'sponging' or 'side spraying' with dye to give another type of traditional antique look.
Average Skin Size: 0.79 - 0.97m² (8½ - 10½ft²) Approx. Cut Size: 75 x 65 cm Standard Substance: 0.8 mm Colours available: Please enquire regarding availability (this leather is generally "made to order") Grades: I and II
Approximate price for single skins: Grade I - £167.00 per skin Grade II - £118.00 per skin Quantity discounts are available.

Rough Calf
We take natural calf from our standard production and buff the reverse side to impart a soft, suede 'nap'. For this reason Rough Calf is also known as Reverse Calf. Often used for the binding of account books and ledgers. Bookcalf can also be supplied as a rough, however please note that as the skins are colour-matched for their grain, variations do occur between batches.
Average Skin Size: 1.07 - 1.16m² (11½ - 12½ft²) Approx. Cut Size: 80 x 70 cm Standard Substance: 0.8 mm Colours available: Natural Grades: I
