Full leather binding of red goat skin sewn on stubs with laced on boards. Onlays of painted leather that continue onto the assembled paper paste downs. Suede flyleaves, handsewn silk endbands, untitled. Bound 2020. Text was designed to document and celebrate the 20th anniversary of the American Academy of Bookbinding in Telluride Co. I let my imagination run free seeking a design that was as unique and magical as AAB.
Design Description - Full leather laced on boards binding in purple/grey Pentland goat. Partial title in Elizabeth ND font cut from turquoise blue leather. Edge-to-edge doublures of the same turquoise leather. Other decorative elements cut from black leather. Hand sewn silk endbands in black, grey, and turquoise. Grey Hahnemuhle Ingres endsheets and meeting guards and black ultra suede flyleaves. Because this book was previously case bound it will be sewn on meeting guards to maintain the open flat characteristics of the original binding. Elizabeth Friedlander was a talented and dedicated designer, calligrapher, and illustrator whose life was upended by history. As she fled, first the Nazis then the Fascists, she was able to keep her father's Kloz violin. Elizabeth's spirit seemed to require a clean unpretentious design. The iconic “F” hole, Elizabeth ND type, and a typographical element she designed for Monotype are the elements of the design, together they speak to her history, grit, and resilience. The color palette was deeply influenced by the weight of history on Elizabeth's life.
