We take rough tanned Calfskin and re-tan the skins with Tara. We then soften and shave to 0.8mm to produce a beautiful, silky soft leather.

They are available in five sizes, and can be either necks, kips, or butts:

  • Extra Small (<0.39m² / 4.2ft²)
  • Small (0.4-0.59m² / 4.3-6.4ft²)
  • Medium (0.60-0.79m² / 6.50-8.50ft²)
  • Large (0.80-0.99m² / 8.75-10.5²)
  • Extra Large (1.00-1.20m² / 10.75-13ft²)
  • Standard Substance: 0.8-0.9mm
  • Colours available: 8 approximate shades, subject to change
  • Grades: Run Selection II/III

The colours of this leather are not intense because this leather is only base dyed as a cheaper aniline leather suitable for staining down to a customer's required shade

Feel free to reach out to us at sales@hewit.com with any specific requests or needs you have for this leather - we're happy to help!

A‘special offer’ BV calf skins

I bought two ‘special offer’ BV calf skins, medium size, in different colours. Both are excellent quality, and very generous in size. They are very good value for money.

Excellent and friendly service but some hitches

Prompt delivery of leather - but the piece was definitely a very pale brown and not the dark brown requested. A telephone enquiry was met with a very helpful response and the prompt dispatch of some dark brown dye, but unfortunately to the wrong address. I made second telephone call and again received a very courteous reply (and apology) and the dye was sent to the right address, arriving in less than 24 hours. I am very pleased with the end result of my book repair.
Every organization makes mistakes but their willingness to put this right was commendable. I would happily use this firm again

Acquiring calf for repair work

Much of my time is spent on restoring the bindings of early printed books. This means using new leather, dyed to match existing bindings, usually for re-backing. Over a number of years, John has supplied light tan calf suitable for such work. He describes on the phone in helpful detail what Hewit's have to offer. This is then promptly despatched. Excellent service every time.
