I have shopped from Hewit for years and was delighted to see this book available on their website. Although I live in Canada and thus am subject to significant shipping charges and on occasion import duties, the price for obtaining this book from Hewit was still less than purchasing it anywhere on the side of the pond.
This 2nd edition of Fine Bookbinding - a Technical Guide is a wonderful illustrated text book for the more specialized needs of a bookbinder involving casing in books with leather. From page 1 through to the end, I found it packed full of extremely useful tips and information accompanied by relevant photographs and drawings. All in all, an enjoyable book.
I noticed that the text block was cased in, in a very shoddy industrial manner with cheap plasticized wrap over the gray boards, a flat spine and poor quality endpapers that appeared to be adhered with acrylic adhesive; I was just a little bit disappointed at the casing for this book on fine bookbinding.
I have not yet assessed the books content. However, the quality of the binding is abysmal, the stitch tension has caused elongation of the stitching holes. This has allowed excess glue to squeeze through, sticking the pages together. The book does not maintain its shape and suffers from self closing syndrome, i. e. it will not stay open.
Helped out with payment issues warmly and promptly. Beautifully and safely packaged and delivered swiftly. Perfect as always!
An excellent contemporary guide with superb attention to detail. Well structured and with a useful sequence of operations at the beginning. The photography could have been a little clearer however.
